Captain Martin E. Conroy

Captain Conroy was born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts. He attended Saint Sebastian's School and Boston College before graduating from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, a Coast Guard license as Third Mate, and a commission as Ensign in the United States Navy. In 2005 he earned a Master of Science in Maritime Management from the Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics at Maine Maritime Academy, and added a Master of Laws in Maritime Law at London Metropolitan University in 2011.

His seagoing experience started with service for American Export Lines as Third Mate of SS Export Democracy in 1976. Subsequent raises of grade through Coast Guard examinations led to a Master's License in 1981. As he raised his license, he was employed by Farrell Lines, Moore-McCormack, and United States Lines on steam and diesel break-bulk and containerized cargo ships in world-wide service, in positions from Third Mate to Chief Mate.

In 1987 he was assigned as Master of MV 2nd LT John P. Bobo, a Maritime Prepositioning Ship operated by American Overseas Marine Corporation (AMSEA), a unit of General Dynamics. He has sailed on 35 ships, including 17 as Master, with major command tours on prepositioning ships, a car carrier, Heavy Lift and Roll-on/Roll-off ships. He has been involved in extensive shipyard projects, including new construction, re-flagging, and major conversion work.

He commanded USNS GySgt Fred W. Stockham from 2001 through 2006. Captain Conroy was based in NASSCO Shipyard in San Diego for her conversion to a Maritime Prepositioning Ship (Enhanced) in 2001. He developed the concept designs for the conversions to her current configuration as an Afloat Forward Support Base (AFSB). USNS Stockham was forward deployed with an embarked military detachment, operating helicopters and surface craft in anti-terrorism. From 2011 - 2013 he worked in the reflagging and operation of heavy lift and containerships. He is employed as Chief Officer/DPO on a cable ship and has completed the Nautical Institute Dynamic Positioning Certification. In 2017 he served as a delegate at IMO to NCSR.

Captain Conroy is a member of the Boston Marine Society Board of Trustees, International Dynamic Positioning Officers Association, Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation Board of Trustees, Nautical Institute, Navy League of the United States, Royal Institute of Navigation, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, United States Naval Institute, and the USS Constitution Museum Board of Overseers.
