Management energy and experience in the United States Merchant Marine

USNS GySgt Fred W Stockham began life as Lica Maersk, built in Denmark as a full containership. She was initially converted at NASSCO as a Large Medium Speed Roll-On Roll-Off ship (LMSR). Her next conversion was the first of three managed by American Overseas Marine Corporation, and changed her to a Maritime Prepositioning Force (Enhanced) (MPF-E) ship. She was then selected to become an Afloat Forward Support Base (AFSB). She had further AFSB improvements, including a permanent hanger for her air detachment in 2006. Captain Conroy directed the MPF(E) conversion, designed the two AFSB conversions and commanded the Stockham during her involvement in the Iraq war, support for the Afganistan bombing missions, and deployment to southeast Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
